June 2001:
It all started on the island of Maui during the time my wonderful
friend Suzie was there to get married. My sweet
friend, Shawny asked about the possibility of leasing out my house and
moving to Bali. I had been describing the two wonderful vacations I
had spent on Bali, one in 1995
and the second (with Suzie) in 1997;
and the current economic conditions in the San Francisco bay area. I
did some quick subtraction and thought, "no, I'd have to supplement
the rent by too much in order to pay the monthly mortgage." :-(

July 2001:
However, when I returned home EVERYTHING dropped into place so perfectly,
it was almost like a command from the universe had come through for me to
go, ASAP to Bali.
- First, a friend (Dave) had recently rented a house 2 blocks from
mine. So I asked him what he thought I could rent my part of my
house for.
- Then I began to get inundated by offers to refi my current mortgage,
as the interest rates were very low now.
- The final piece fell into place when my great friend Craig and his
beautiful fiancée Paula returned from Rome (I had visited them in January).
They were looking for a place and loved my home, so we chatted and
they decided to lease it and act as the property managers for 1 year!
(July 23rd)
Wow, the excitement of returning to Bali filled me as I began to pack
my home of 8 years! I then also decided I wanted to rid myself of
90% of my belongings. (Ok, so I'm a little bit of a pack-rat).
Also, Craig & Paula need to move in by August 10th (18 days from July
23rd)!

August 2001
In the 18 days I had from the time Craig & Paul said they wanted my
place, I had to:

Arrange for a 2nd mortgage on my house
to lower the payments
-
Schedule all my bills
-
Set up Bank accounts and access to my
safe deposit box
-
Sell many of my books and pack the rest
-
Sell many of my CDs and give away the
rest (luckily I had ALREADY transferred them all to my computer (MP3s)
-
Decide what else I could sell and start
running ads (car, furniture, etc)
-
Decide what I would give to charity and
make those arrangements
-
Arrange for 3 garage sales and man them
-
Obtain airline tickets
-
Decide & set aside what I would be
taking to Bali
-
Re-configure two of my computers that I
sold to Craig.
-
Decide what would be tossed and arrange
for a dumpster
-
Go thru the garage and my under-house
storage
-
Go thru my files
-
Fly down to LA for a 4 day week-end
Briscoe Family Reunion that had been planned for many months (also to
tell them the news - I had not told my family, yet)
-
Sell my car
-
After everything was out of my house,
arrange for carpet and window cleaning
-
Arrange for places to stay and a car to
borrow between moving out of my house and selling my car and actually
leaving
-
Gather all the articles, edit them,
arrange the newsletter and get everything to the printers for the
September issue of the West Point Inn newsletter
-
on and on and on
The details and the plans and the
coordination and the timing. A nightmare for most people.
Luckily my profession is Systems Analyst, PLUS, I'm a Virgo. Those
two things came together in such a way that I actually got everything
done. On time!
My friends really came through for
me! The following wanted me to stay with them - Becky, Mary, Greg,
Darrell & Darlene, and more. Darrell & Darlene even lent me
their car. So from August 10 until I left, I had friends to take
care of me.

Email sent 8/20/2001:
Well, the gods are still smiling on me :-) I now have my flight info:
- Leave Wed. 9/12 - SFO to LAX on United Flight #2079 at 9:30 PM
- Arrive LAX at 10:50PM
- Leave LAX on Malaysia (MH) Flight #95 at 1:15AM (Thursday morning)
- Arrive Kuala Lumpur on Friday at 11:45AM (Lose 1 day crossing the IDL)
- Leave Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Flight #723 at 4:25PM for Jakarta
- Arrive Jakarta at 5:15PM
- Leave Jakarta at 7:45PM on Garuda Flight #412 for Bali!
- Arrive Bali on Friday, Sept. 14th at 10:25PM
I had to get an open ended ticket; and the return must be within 1 year
of Sept 12th, so ya know I'll be back. So thanks go out to Ellen, the
Travel EXPERT (her company is Funtrips and her cell phone is 510-757-7995)
found this package thru a 'consolidator' for $1150! Which is incredible!
So in 3 and 1/2 weeks, I'll be getting a message and studying
Indonesian, in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia!
